Kotoku, Shiyei (Sheyei / Shyei) Yukie (?) (active 1920s / 1890-1933?) (Los Angeles)

Born in Japan, Kotoku settled in Los Angeles where he was active as an artist from at least 1921. Like his fellow Japanese photographers in Los Angeles in the 1920s, he dared unusual subjects, such as back yards and railroad tracks, breaking free of the pretty Eucalyptus landscapes produced by the majority of artists of European background. His excellence was recognized not only in Los Angeles but in Carmel and it was announced in 1927 that he was on his way to France to study art.
